Each night over 8,000 people are locked up in prisons across Scotland, the majority of whom:

• come from our poorest areas.
• have suffered abuse, traumatic bereavements and have mental health issues
• use drugs and alcohol to mask the pain – making imprisonment and an early death both more likely
• are stigmatised on release making a return to custody more likely
