2026 - Show Mercy

Introducing the 2026 theme

Life can be hard. Sometimes it can be cruel.

We all carry struggles that other people never see. We all make mistakes. Sometimes we make choices that leave us feeling trapped, isolated or unsure how to move forward.

At times like these, we need people to give us a break. To show kindness. To try to understand. To lend a hand.

We need mercy.

We all know what it feels like to need mercy. But how good are we at showing it to others?

The theme for Prisoners Week 2026 is simple: Show Mercy.

It is a challenge to look beyond the label, the mistake, the past or the circumstances, and see the person in front of us. A fellow human being, just like us, who is trying to find their way through life and who, sometimes, simply needs a break.

Mercy does not ignore harm or pretend that wrongdoing does not matter. But it chooses to see the person, not just what they have done.

Mercy can look like kindness, forgiveness and understanding. A second chance. Practical help. Sometimes, it is simply choosing not to write someone off.

For people in prison, their families, victims of crime, prison staff, chaplains and communities across Scotland, mercy can make a real difference.

This Prisoners Week, who will you show mercy to?
